Michael Schultes (born 1954) is one of Germany's leading contemporary photographers. Among his recent work is an exploration of the visual universe dealing with pure naked beauty and imagination. “We all like to fantasize, and what you cannot see or feel can often be more exiting when it is left to your imagination. The sexuality of a photograph has more to do with the photographers vision and the viewers fantasy than with what the model is wearing – or not.”
Michael Schultes had just turned 27 when he discovered two very important qualities which have a central influence on his work: “I find the body beautiful. Its form is ever changing, every body is able to provoke different reactions. The challenge for me is making photographs that reveal the body without totally exposing it.” And on the other side he corroborates his doubtlessly elegant and dramatic photography by a hardly noticeable constructive framework.
“The camera empowers you to be intimate with the lens, sometimes in a way that may not be possible with another human. The lens is an eye that you can always trust, but not always control.”

Der Photograph
Geboren 1954 in Landshut an der Isar, kehrte Michael Schultes schon in der frühen Kindheit seiner bayerischen Heimat den Rücken. Begründet durch den Beruf seines Vaters, ein Wissenschaftler und Veterinärmediziner, folgte eine Odyssee durch mehrere deutsche Städte. Einen festen Ruhe- und Bezugspunkt fand der Schüler zunächst in der Malerei.
Schon früh entwickelte er sein Interesse an den Abbildungen fremder Länder. Fasziniert von den Farben und Landschaften südlicher Regionen, bannt der damalige Gymnasiast seine Eindrücke auf Leinwand. Für seine Arbeiten erhielt Schultes mehrere Auszeichnungen, unter anderem den Preis der Stadt Wiesbaden (1979, „Hacienda Brazil“).
Durch die mit Öl- und Acrylfarben gestalteten Bilder inspiriert, begann er, sich mit der künstlerischen Fotografie zu beschäftigen. Fotos sind für ihn nicht bloße Wiedergabe einer realen Situation oder eines Gebiets, sie sind vielmehr Arbeitsfläche und Umsetzungsmöglichkeit zugeich für die Gestaltung eines einzigartigen Bildes.
Ende der 70er Jahre vollendete Schultes in Wiesbaden seine Ausbildung zum Werbefotografen. Seit 1979 arbeitet er als selbständiger Fotograf im werblichen und künstlerischen Bereich. Zu seinen Kunden zählen audi, Braun, Henkel, DuPont und zahlreiche andere namhafte Firmen in ganz Europa und inzwischen auch in den USA.
Neben Produktfotografie und Katalogillustrationen verwirklichte Schultes Kalenderprojekte ( Colors 1991, Misses of Germany 1994, Ansichtssache 2002, Men Erotic 2002 ), fotografierte Buchtitel (Criminal Records) , Bücher: Stadtportrait Frankfurt/Main , und Plattencover (Moskwa TV, Oh Well) und bestückte mehrere Ausstellungen (Zeitgenössische Modefotografie Airportgalerie FFM im Okt.1997, Deutsche sehen Deutsche im Internet seit Sep. 1997, Knells Katzen, Hohl-Kohl-lektion, Menschenbilder , Jaguar XK8 u.a.). Außerdem fiel er durch außergewöhnliche Modefotografien auf.
Auch das Archiv des Photographen wird immer stärker genutzt, um die unterschiedlichsten Produkte emotional zu unterstützen.
Seit dem Jahr 1999 ist er mit einer eigenen Website ( http://www.schultes-photo.de) im Internet präsent. Auch in Internetplatformen wie www.max.de, www.photographie.de und www.view.stern.de und vielen anderen internationalen Adressen ist er mit seinen Arbeiten vertreten.
Geprägt durch zahlreiche Wohnortwechsel und ein beständiges Faible für das Fremde in den Kulturen anderer Länder, spielt die Reisefotografie für Michael Schultes seit mehr als 20 Jahren eine ganz besondere Rolle. Fotografisch höchst anspruchsvolle Reisen durch europäische,asiatische, amerikanische sowie australische Metropolen und ihr Hinterland füllen Archive der besonderen Art. Denn es ist nicht die pure Abbildung populärer Sehenswürdigkeiten, sondern eine fotografische Aufarbeitung der Landschaften, der Bevölkerung und der Geschichte, die der Künstler Schultes vermitteln will. Seine Reisefotos illustrieren Bildbände, Reiseführer und schmücken Ausstellungen wie Privatwohnungen.
Michael Schultes lebt und arbeitet heute in Engelstadt / Rheinhessen.
